#1: Befriending the Skew Chisel

Alan will cover the shaping, sharpening and honing of this sometimes fickle tool. Following that he will explore at least 8 different cuts including pommels, rolling, planing and facing off with the skew.

#2: End-Grain Hollowing with Hook Type Tools

Alan will describe the problems in hollowing end-grain projects (such as boxes, goblets, vessels, and end-grain bowls). Next he will show why a hook tool serves as one solution to such problems—and why it has arisen around the world and over time as a common solution. He will also have a variety of commercial variations—followed by a demonstration of making a basic hook tool.

Alan Lacer has been involved in the turning field for over thirty years as a turner, teacher, writer, exhibition coordinator, demonstrator and past president of the American Association of Woodturners. His work has appeared in a number of regional and national shows and he has been a regular instructor and demonstrator of the craft—having worked in over 45 states and 4 foreign countries. His writings have covered technical aspects of woodturning, historical commentaries and turning traditions in Japan and Germany. He has also produced three videos on his own, with two of them winning a total of four national awards.
